Recognition for Leeds sculptor

Posted 5 years ago

Well, it’s all happening now! On 11 July 2019 I’ll be unveiling a Leeds Civic Trust plaque to Catherine Mawer as part of this year’s Yorkshire Sculpture International. Catherine was a professional sculptor and managed the family stone masonry business in Leeds during the 1800s: two truly remarkable achievements at a time when women weren’t even in control of their own money, property or bodies let along pursue a creative practice.

Fellow artist Jill McKnight will also be unveiling another plaque to the Mawer Group of Sculptors with words from Mawer researcher Linda O’Carroll.

If you’d like to come along to the Henry Moore Institute at 4pm, please book via Eventbrite.
