A new public art work for Leeds

2024

A collaboration with David Hawkins and folk from St George's Crypt addressing homelessness

Share Project

A new public art work for Leeds co-created with artist David Hawkins and folks at St George’s Crypt.

St George’s Crypt is a 95-year old, award winning charity in Leeds dedicated to supporting homeless, vulnerable people and those struggling with addiction. David and I are working with a group of people who access their services to create an artwork in the public realm that aims to reshape perceptions of homelessness.

The project is in its first phase where we’re embarking on a creative journey together learning about public art in its broadest sense and exploring different materials and techniques. We are delivering a number of workshops in-house, before working with partner arts organisations Assembly House, Leeds Art Gallery, Left Bank Leeds and Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Our ambition for Phase 1 is to bring forward a proposal for a work of public art for Leeds that could be a single installation or a number of smaller interventions across the city. Phase 2 will see the realisation of the artwork in the city. The aim is not only to provide an artistic outlet for our fellow creatives but also to shift public perceptions and encourage respect for the homeless community.

The images here are show some of the artwork produced during the workshops.
