A new public art work for Leeds co-created with Caroline, David, Donna, Hilary, Katherine, Mohammed, Owen, Paul and Pippa
‘Blanket’ is the name of a proposed sculpture co-created with members of the Lazarus Art Group at St George’s Crypt, a 95-year old charity in Leeds dedicated to supporting homeless, vulnerable people and those struggling with addiction.
Destined for a city centre location the sculpture depicts a colourful, knitted blanket resting on a bench. It’s shaped as though it’s been wrapped around someone’s shoulders who’s just stood up and walked away. ‘Blanket’ is a standalone artwork and an interactive space, a place where passers-by can sit, reflect or take a photo enveloped in its shelter and message.
This bright and joyful artwork will make a colourful and valuable contribution to the urban landscape and carries the voices of those who are the most marginalised in society. More than just an object, ‘Blanket’ is a symbol of comfort, security and human connection in an increasingly fractured world.
We are currently fundraising for Phase 2 which will see the fabrication and installation of the sculpture. If you’d like support the project, please see our Just Giving page.
Phase 1
In order to get to the concept of ‘Blanket’ we embarked on a creative journey together learning about public art in its broadest sense and exploring different materials and techniques. We delivered a number of workshops at St George’s Crypt, before working off-site with partner arts organisations Assembly House, Leeds Art Gallery, Left Bank Leeds, Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Seagulls. The aim is not only to provide an artistic outlet for our fellow creatives but also to shift public perceptions and encourage respect for the homeless community.
Funders: Arts Council England, Leeds City Council’s Cultural Investment Progamme and private donors.
