After a whirlwind week, here’s a short film about Ribbons which includes interviews with some of the amazing women on the sculpture.
I’ve dedicated Ribbons to my mum Sue Hale. She fought to give me the education and opportunities that she never had growing up and drummed into me from an early age that I could do anything I wanted to regardless of my gender and that all she wanted for me was to be happy.
Well I’m very happy to have created Ribbons for the women of Leeds who have made – and continue to make – our city what it is. It has truly been the honour and privilege to my life and career.
Many, many thanks to Rachel Reeves (the first female Chancellor of the Exchequer), Judith Blake (the first female leader of Leeds City Council) and Simone Wonnacott (the first female VC of Leeds Arts University) for deciding to do something about this and spearheading the project in the first place. (I still can’t quite believe that there are still so many firsts in the 2020s WTAF??).
And to all the organisations that partnered the project – Leeds Arts University, Leeds City College and Leeds City Council, and those who supported it – Leeds BID, Caddick, Leeds Civic Trust, Henry Moore Foundation, Leeds Playhouse, The Liz and Terry Brammall Foundation.
Also, a massive thanks to the team who made Ribbons a reality – Fish Fabrications, Skyhooks Engineering, Wood Logisitics, G&R Electrical and KBI UK.
And to my home team for keeping me sane, fed and watered.
