Delighted to be working with artist David Hawkins and folk at St George’s Crypt to create a new piece of public art for Leeds.
The launch of Ribbons this year and of Hibiscus Rising by Yinka Shonibare in 2023 marks a new direction for public art programming in Leeds that aims to raise up the voices of those marginalised in society and the public realm. This project’s working title is Lazarus and aims to value the strength, resilience and creative expression of people with lived experience of homelessness.
We’ve already begun Phase 1 of our creative journey with workshops exploring different materials whilst getting to grips with what public art is in its broadest sense. David and I are working with some brilliantly talented people across drawing, painting, poetry, sound, music and gardening and are super excited to see what ideas we can come up with together.
In the new year we’ll be teaming up with partner arts organisations Assembly House, Leeds Art Gallery, Left Bank Leeds and Yorkshire Sculpture Park to continue our creative journey and to foster new relationships between the homeless community and the cultural sector. Watch this space!
